Woodbine: Established Southwest Living on the Edge of Fish Creek Park
Woodbine is a well-established southwest Calgary community known for its mature trees, quiet residential streets, and direct connection to Fish Creek Provincial Park. Developed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, it sits at the western edge of the city, bordered by Anderson Road to the north, 24 Street SW to the east, Fish Creek Provincial Park to the south, and Tsuut’ina Trail (the southwest ring road) to the west. It offers a calm, settled neighbourhood feel with groceries, schools, and major routes close at hand, making it a great fit for families, first-time buyers, and anyone who wants nature on their doorstep without giving up city convenience.

Top Amenities in Woodbine
Shopping & Dining
Woodbine Square (2525 Woodview Dr SW) is the community’s everyday hub, anchored by Safeway, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Scotiabank, with health and professional services such as dental, optometry, chiropractic, and physiotherapy nearby. For bigger shopping trips, Southcentre Mall is a short drive east on Anderson Road, and the Costco and Shops at Buffalo Run on Tsuut’ina Nation land are only minutes away via Stoney Trail.
Parks & Recreation
Fish Creek Provincial Park is the star attraction, but Woodbine also has its own green spaces, including Woodbine Park and Woodborough Park, with playgrounds, open fields, and pathways. The Woodcreek Community Association, which serves both Woodbine and neighbouring Woodlands, offers tennis courts, permanent pickleball courts, a skateboard park, two paved skating rinks, basketball nets, and several playing fields. Annual highlights include a Stampede Breakfast, a community clean-up, and Skate with Santa.
Schools & Family Appeal
Woodbine is home to Woodbine School (Calgary Board of Education, K-6) and St. Jude Elementary (Catholic, K-6), with additional public and Catholic schools in neighbouring Woodlands, Cedarbrae, and Braeside. Junior high and high school designations depend on your address, so families should confirm boundaries and eligibility with the Calgary Board of Education or Calgary Catholic School District.
Transit & Accessibility
MAX Yellow, Calgary’s bus rapid transit line, begins at Woodpark Station in the Woodbine and Woodlands area and runs to downtown via 14 Street SW, with stops at Southland Leisure Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, Mount Royal University, and Marda Loop. Local bus service, including Route 56, has also connected the community with Anderson LRT Station, so check Calgary Transit for current routes and schedules. Like much of the southwest, most residents rely on driving for everyday trips, and quick access to Anderson Road and Stoney Trail makes that easy.
Things You May Not Know About Woodbine
Woodbine is the end of the line for MAX Yellow. The route’s southern terminus sits right in the community, so Woodbine residents start their commute at the front of the line.
Woodbine and Woodlands share one community association. Woodbine and its eastern neighbour Woodlands are both represented by the Woodcreek Community Association, so programs, rinks, and events are shared between the two communities.
Fish Creek Park is bigger than most people realize. It covers roughly 13.5 square kilometres, stretches about 19 km from east to west, and is more than three times the size of Vancouver’s Stanley Park. It offers more than 100 km of trails and over 200 species of birds, and wildlife cameras have even captured cougars, bears, bobcats, and moose.
The park nearly never happened. Fish Creek Valley was protected in large part because the province, led by then-Premier Peter Lougheed, stepped in to preserve it before the city grew over it. Woodbine homeowners benefit from that decision every day.
Woodbine borders the Tsuut’ina Nation. That puts Costco, the Shops at Buffalo Run, and the southwest ring road within a couple of minutes of many Woodbine homes.
Most homes were built between the late 1970s and the 1980s. The typical Woodbine home is around 45 years old, which means many have been renovated and some are due for updates. Buyers should ask about roofing, windows, furnaces, and plumbing. In particular, homes built between roughly 1978 and 1995 may have Poly-B water lines. Many Alberta installations used copper or brass fittings, but some insurers still ask about Poly-B or require an inspection, so it is worth confirming before you buy.
It is a settled, long-term community. Woodbine has roughly 9,000 residents (2016 Census) and a somewhat older age profile than Calgary overall, with seniors making up a larger share of the population than the city average.
